Learning by Doing: ‘DO It Yourself’ Camp

“Education is not an affair of ‘telling’ and ‘being told’, but an active constructive process… its enactment in practice requires that the school environment be equipped with agencies for doing.” (John Dewey 1916, in his book, Democracy and Education.)

Kansai – Nerolac Paints Limited (KNPL), Bawal through their CSR initiatives provided this opportunity to the Govt. High School of Suthana village,Bawal so that children can learn by doing. SACHETAN organization assumed this responsibility of agency for doing and organised learning by doing camp – ‘Do It Yourself’ for two days (28-29 March 2016) with the support of Kansai – Nerolac Paints. The focus was on designing different activity based sessions and for the purpose several thoughts were put in to create simple ‘doing devices and tools’.

The chosen activities were from the segment of traditional art and craft like; paper mache, paper rolling, and jewellery making from seeds and other natural items, fabric painting through stencils, and block printing. The activities supported the larger goal of environment protection, value education, social and cultural awareness, and further more nurturing a sense of closeness to the nature and its resources. The basic idea was to let the children about getting involved in an activity and, through the process of doing the activity, learn how that happened? how do they feel about the activity?, and what the activity makes them think about..?.
